Les Chevaliers du Ciel (aka The Knights of the Sky) is a 2004 French-Belgian film about WWII fighter pilots. It is based on the squadron created by Marcel Dassault, founder of Dassault Aviation and one of France's most famous 20th century aircraft designers. The movie revolves around a group of French aristocrats who take up duties as fighter pilots to defend France from the Nazis. They use machines designed by Marcel Dassault, who provides them with obsolete 1930s fighters because he hopes to prove that they are still reliable aircrafts. The movie is dedicated to the Dassault's "fabulous grays", the first generation of French fighter pilots who fought bravely against Germany during World War II.The film features an original score by French jazz musician Martial Solal. The soundtrack also includes pieces from Claude Debussy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven. And music by Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur. "Les Chevaliers du Ciel" was released on December 7, 2004 in France, on January 22, 2005 in Spain and on February 18, 2005 in Belgium. It premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, in the Critics' Week section. It became a box office success over there, grossing over 6 million euros.The film received generally positive reviews by critics. Review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 75% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 60 reviews, with an average score of 6.1/10. The general consensus is that it is a well made tribute to France's WWII fighter pilots and to Dassault Aviation who provided them with outdated aircrafts - "Les Chevaliers du Ciel" represents the love these French heroes had for their work and for their race, in an honest and moving homage. The film's soundtrack album was released on November 30, 2004. "Les Chevaliers du Ciel" was released on Region 2 DVD by Universal Pictures on March 3, 2005. The film was later included in the box set "Les Chevaliers du Ciel - Collection Speciale", released by Universal Studios on October 16, 2005.
